A “Directed vehicle” is a vehicle required by the State of California to have its Smog Inspection performed at a smog station meeting certain performance standards. These standards were enacted and are titled under the STAR Program. Stations meeting specific standards are certified by theDepartment of Consumer Affairs Bureau

of Automotive Repair (BAR) and are authorized to inspect directed vehicles.

How does the state of California determine which vehicles are directed?

The State of California mandates that a certain percentage of the vehicles registered with the California DMV undergo smog testing at Star Certified Stations. Additionally, vehicles with high emitter profiles fall into the directed vehicle status, as well. These are vehicles that fail smog inspection or are on the lower end of passing the smog check. The last category of vehicles that must undergo a smog check at a Star Station is the gross polluter. These vehicles are ones that failed the smog check and the pollution that is emitted from the tail pipe exceed normal smog check failure standards.

Locate a Star Smog Check Station Nearby

If you are one of the lucky motorists who is selected to have your vehicle smog tested at a Star Certified or Test Only station, then you must first locate one of these inspection facilities.
